Planning an elopement? Dreaming of saying “I do” with a 360-degree mountain view? A Max Patch elopement might be exactly what you’re looking for.
As a Max Patch elopement photographer, I help couples create unforgettable wedding days in this stunning mountain-top meadow.
Max Patch is a bald mountain on the Appalachian Trail in the Pisgah National Forest of North Carolina. It sits near the Tennessee border and offers panoramic views of the Smoky Mountains. You’ll find wildflowers in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant foliage in fall, and snow-dusted peaks in winter.
It’s one of my favorite places to photograph love stories.
Max Patch is peaceful, wild, and breathtaking. Unlike traditional venues, it offers raw beauty and freedom. You can say your vows under open skies, surrounded by nature. It’s ideal for couples who want something meaningful and private.
You don’t need to spend thousands on decorations — nature handles that for you.
Maybe. It all depends on the size of your event. For events of 75 guests or less, a permit is not required.
If you plan to have more than 75 people in attendance, you can apply here:

Plan ahead—permits can take 4–6 weeks to process. Also, commercial photographers like me need a separate permit, which I take care of for you.
Spring (March–May):
Expect blooming wildflowers and mild temps. Days are warm, but nights get chilly. It’s also colder on top of the bald due to the wind.
Summer (June–August):
Perfect for sunrise or sunset elopements. Days are warm (60–75°F) and breezy on the bald.
Fall (September–November):
Colorful leaves and golden light make this the most popular season. Mornings are cool, but afternoons stay pleasant.
Winter (December–February):
Cold and snowy, but magical. You’ll likely have the mountain to yourselves. Bring warm layers and boots.
Weather can change quickly, so I help couples stay flexible and plan for backups.
The hike is easy to moderate. The most popular trail is the Max Patch Loop, which is 1.5 miles round trip. Elevation gain is gentle and manageable for most fitness levels. Or – you can choose to hike straight up, which is more difficult.
There’s a small parking lot at the trailhead. From there, it’s a 10–15 minute walk to the summit. I recommend bringing comfy shoes and layering your outfit for hiking up.
You’ll want to plan ahead, especially during peak seasons. Here are some favorite spots nearby:
For those craving adventure, you can camp overnight and wake up to the sunrise on the bald. Just be sure to follow Leave No Trace principles.
